Connecting the Dots 2019
April 10, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Join us for our fifth-annual Connecting the Dots conference. Our Keynote speaker this year is Sean McElwee, a cast member from the hit television series “Born This Way”. The Emmy-award winning reality show highlights seven young adults with Down syndrome as they work towards greater independence. Navigating issues with Housing, Transportation, Employment and Relationships are all topics during each season. Sean also has his own clothing line “Seanese”. Sean’s presentation is entitled “It Could Happen” – all about possABILITIES!
Joining Sean is his mother, Sandra McElwee, an author and advocate for the Down syndrome community. Sandra’s presentation is “Transforming a School” – the story of how Sean was the first with any disability to be fully included in his school, and how by 4th grade the entire school transformed to an inclusive school.
Along with our keynote, the conference offers two subsequent breakout presentations (12 sessions), including a variety of topics such as: Strategies for working with children with anxiety or OCD, Local Resources (panel), Healthy Living Strategies (panel), Positive Behavior Supports, Legal Strategies, Youth Mental Health, Pre-employment strategies for parents, Financial Strategies, Self-Directed IEPs, Communication strategies for those with limited verbal skills (repeated).
